Spring Training Report 10

Hello Bisons Booster Club members, family and friends,

This is your Booster Club First Vice-President reporting from Dunedin, Florida, for the last time in nearly two weeks. TRIVIA QUESTIONS: 1. What distinction did Santiago Espinal receive at the end of the 2019 season? 2. What American League team won 103 games one season in the 1950s, but did not win the League Championship that year? Answers below. WEATHER REPORT: Temperature at 6:32 AM when I started out on my 2 mile walk south on the Pinellas Trail and back via a city street: 59 degrees under partly cloudy skies with a 4 mph wind blowing from the ESE.  With the sunrise here at 6:53 AM, the Trail already was lighted as I left the hotel.    Temperature at the 1:07 PM start of today's game: 77 degrees under lessening clouds with a 11 mph wind blowing in from right field.  Sunset tonight was at 6:31 PM. SPORTS PAGE: After Pittsburgh and Toronto scored a combined 22 runs in Bradenton yesterday, the Pirates and Blue Jays managed to score only 4 runs this afternoon in Dunedin, all of which belonged to the Jays. At bat for the Blue Jays: Santiago Espinol SS went 0 for 3 including a strikeout.  Thus, for the first time this year, Espinol did not reach base. In addition, he committed 2 fielding errors. .400. Reuben Tejada SS grounded out to the second baseman..125. Cavan Biggio  2B grounded out to the pitcher and flew out to left field. .231 Lourdes Gurriel Jr. LF grounded out to the pitcher, hit his first double of the spring and walked. .067. Forrest Wall PR-LF ran for Gurriel, stole second and third base and scored on a passed ball. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. DH struck out twice and grounded out to the shortstop. .235. Rowdy Tellez 1B also struck out twice and grounded out to the shortstop. .313. Randal Grichuk CF flied out to center field, walked twice and scored the Jays first run. .182. Andy Burns replaced Tellez at 1B in the 7th inning, but never came to bat. Caleb Joseph C struck out in his only time at bat. .222. Danny Jansen C for the second time in 2 games hit the first pitch he saw for a home run, his second of the spring, and later flew out to CF..556.  He also threw out a runner trying to steal second base. On the mound: Sean Reid-Foley pitched one inning allowing 1 hit. 0.00. For the Pirates: Jake Elmore LF struck out once and grounded out to the second baseman. .059. Game time: 2:41. Attendance: 4,473. RHP Nate Pearson has not allowed a hit through his first 3  innings in Spring Training.  He now leads Toronto in strikeouts with 6 without issuing a walk as he has faced the minimum number of batters in his two appearances. Former Bisons in other games played today: For the Orioles: Dwight Smith Jr. LF went 1 for 3. For the Cardinals: Brett Cecil pitched the 4th inning and allowed only 1 hit. For the Red Sox: Kevin Pillar RF was 1 for 3. For the Tigers: starting pitcher Daniel Norris pitched 2 innings, giving up 4 runs on 6 hits with 2 strikeouts. For the Rockies: Daniel Murphy 1B was hitless in 3 trips to the plate. For the Marlins: Jon Berti CF did not get a hit in his only trip to the plate. For the Dodgers: Justin Turner 3B was 1 for 3. For the Rangers: Shin Soo Choo RF went 0 for 3. In the annual charity game between the Rays and Twins wives yesterday, Brandow Lowe's wife Madison hit four home runs (one inside the park) and Andrew Kittredge's wife Tobey hit 2 homers in a 20-6 win for the Rays' wives. IN OTHER NEWS: The State of Florida still counts on a lot of spring breakers from colleges and other places to boost the economy during the month of March, but localities try to keep behavior under control and destruction of property to a minimum.  In Panama City, spring breakers cannot drink alcoholic beverages in March on the beach as the town seeks to lessen rowdy parties.  The monitoring ban is paired with a 2:00 AM deadline to buy alcohol anywhere within the city limits. Two people have tested positive for the coronavirus in the Tampa Bay area and over 125 in the rest of the State of Florida.  As we go out to eat and travel while in Dunedin, we see no sign of people wearing face masks or taking any other extreme measures. Schools are placing sanitation stations at their entrances and are advising students to wash their hands before eating lunch and after taking physical education classes.  Universities either are canceling trips for students out of the country or  changing the destination of trips already scheduled. TRIVIA ANSWERS: 1. At the end of the 2019 season, despite having played 28 games with the Bisons to end the season, Santiago Espinal was named a Full Season All-Star with AA level New Hampshire where he drove in 57 runs with a .278 batting average. 2. The New York Yankees finished 103-51 (,669) in 1954, but still finished eight games behind the pennant winning Indians.  Cleveland then lost the World Series in four games to the New York Giants. BACK PAGE: Today's game ends our first trip to Dunedin this year.   Rather than drive through the heavy traffic in Tampa and along Interstate 4 after the game, we are staying in the Holiday Inn until Tuesday morning when we will traverse that route back to West Melbourne where, after unpacking, we will pick up our collie, Mimzie, from the doggy motel to end her vacation for this year.
