Spring Training Report 11

Hello Bisons Booster Club members, family and friends,

This is your Booster Club First Vice-President reporting from West Melbourne, Florida, after returning home from Dunedin. TRIVIA QUESTIONS: 1. How did Vladimir Guerrero Jr. rank among American League rookies last year? 2. What Major League season was known as the "Year of the Hitter"? Answers below. WEATHER REPORT: Temperature at 6:29 AM when I started out on my 2-mile hike south on the Pinellas Trail and back on Dunedin city streets: 63 degrees under clear skies with a 3 MPH wind blowing out of the SSE.  The high temperature in West Melbourne this afternoon was 85 degrees.  The record high on this date in Dunedin was 86 degrees in 1945. SPORTS PAGE: The Blue Jays did not play today  It was a day for the players to work out in camp and for the Toronto staff to make some decisions about who should remain in the Major League camp and who should be assigned to the minor league camp. Most other teams also had the day off.  Only 4 games were scheduled today and the one with the Diamondbacks at the Royals does not start until 8:05 PM, so I will not report on that contest. The only former Bison who played in a game today was Daniel Murphy who went 1 for 3 for the Rockies. IN OTHER NEWS: The update of Joe Overfield's history of the Bisons , "The Seasons of Buffalo Baseball: 1857-2019," will be released at Sahlen Field on Tuesday, June 16th., when the Bisons have a 7:05 PM game.  The book will be available in the Sahlen Field gift shop and online on the Bisons website. Our trip back to West Melbourne was uneventful, but it took nearly 2 hours to get unpacked and check out the mail that had piled up while we were away. TRAVIA ANSWERS: 1.  Among American League rookies in 2019, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. ranked 1st in hits (126), tied for 1st in doubles (26), tied for 3rd in extra base its (43), 3rd in walks (46), 3rd in RBI (69) and tied for 7th in home runs (15). 2.  1930 became known as the peak season of the live-ball era with new highs in batting totals.  Chicago's Hack Wilson hit 56 home runs and a record 191 runs batted in.  The National League batting average was .303 with the New York Giants hitting a league-high .319.  Six of the 8 teams in the NL batted .300 or better.  The Phillies had a league-worst 6.71 ERA.  In the American League, the Yankees led with a .309 average as the AL averaged .288. BACK PAGE: On Wednesday, I plan to volunteer at school for a little over 2 hours and then drive to Port St. Lucie for the Mets game vs the Cardinals.
