Spring Training Report 2

Hello Bisons Booster Club members, family and friends,

This is your Booster Club First Vice-President reporting from West Melbourne, Florida, after coming back from Port St. Lucie and another Mets game. TRIVIA QUESTIONS: 1.  What former Bison had 3 stolen bases in the Blue Jays first spring training game this year? 2.  What player had the highest number retired? Answers below. WEATHER REPORT: The temperature in Port St. Lucie during the game today hovered between 73 and 75 degrees with a 12 mph wind blowing across the field from right to left under partly cloudy skies. SPORTS PAGE: This afternoon, the Blue Jays played the Twins to a 9-inning 5-5 tie, scattering 7 hits and committing 2 errors. Forrest Wall LF hit a single and had an RBI in his only time at bat. Joe Panik 2B went hitless but did drive in a run. Andy Burns 3B hit a single, drove in a run and scored a run in his only trip to the plate. Andy Kivlehan 1B walked in one of his 2 plate appearances. Rowdy Tellez DH hit 2 singles and drove in 2 runs. Anthony Alford CF was 0 for 3 and Reese McGuire C went 0 for 2. On the mound: Anthony Kay pitched the first 2 innings allowing 3 hits and 2 earned runs with 2 strikeouts. Jay Waguespack pitched the third inning, walking 1 and striking out 2. Tom Pannone gave up 3 hits and a run while striking out 1 in the 4th inning. Sean Reid Foley got through the 5th inning allowing only 1 hit. Justin Miller threw a scoreless 6th inning. Kirby Snead allowed a walk, a hit and a run in the 8th inning. Ryan Dull  closed out the game giving up one hit with one strikeout. The game that I watched between the Mets and the Cardinals ended in a 3-3 tie.  The only former Bison to appear in the game was relief pitcher Jeurys Familia who completed the second inning allowing a single and walking one batter.  After today's game, Tim Tebow, who stared in LF this afternoon, has had 2 strikeouts and 2 walks in 2 games. Attendance: 6030. A few players were working out on the minor league fields prior to the start of today's game in Port St. Lucie. Former Bisons in other games played today: For the Marlins: two-handed pitcher Pat Venditte threw an inning and allowed 1 earned run on 3 hits. For the Rangers: Shin Soo Choo DH was hitless in 2 trips to the plate. IN OTHER NEWS: The highlight of the day for me was having a chance to talk with former Bisons manager Terry Collin who still serves on the administrative staff for the Mets.  As soon as I greeted him with "Hello from Buffalo," he broke into a broad smile and responded, "Oh, Greene."  Then, he talked again about how much he enjoyed being in Western New York and how often he still talks with folks in Buffalo.  He spent a lot of time today on the CloverPark concourse signing autographs. TRIVIA ANSWERS: 1.  Former Bisons outfielder, Anthony Alford stole 3 bases for the Blue Jays against the Yankees during the Jays first spring training game this year, including stealing home from third base one time.  Alford is working hard to make the Blue Jays team as a reserve outfielder. 2.  In 1997, the White Sox retired Carlton Fisk's unusual number 72, which he chose to represent the year of both his rookie season and his son's birth.  The Red Sox retired his #27 jersey in 2000. BACK PAGE: Tomorrow morning, my wife and I are on our way to Dunedin to spend a week watching the Blue Jays to check out how Vladimir Guerrero Jr. looks as well as many other former as well as future Bisons.
