Postseason Report 2

Updated: Oct 1

Hello Bisons Booster Club members, family and friends,

This is your Bisons Booster Club First Vice-President reporting from Buffalo, New York. TRIVIA QUESTIONS: 1.  What former Bisons pitcher has the lowest earned run average for the Blue Jays now that they have completed the 2020 regular season? 2. What set of brothers combined for the most home runs? Bonus trivia question: What Buffalo Bisons manager never got to manage a game played by the Bisons? Answers below. WEATHER REPORT: The lowest temperature at the start of a game during the Blue Jays final home stand in Sahlen Field was 64 degrees on Tuesday, September 22nd, a 6:37 PM start, and the highest temperature at the start of a game during the same home stand was 81 degrees on Sunday, September 27th a 3:07 PM start.  Interesting note: 69 degrees was the temperature at the start of the games on Wednesday and Thursday, September 23rd and 24th and it was the average high temperature for those dates in Western New York. SPORTS PAGE: On Thursday, September 24th, the Blue Jays fired Bisons manager Ken Huckaby before he ever had a chance to manage a game in Buffalo and after supervising the Toronto players at their alternate training site in Frontier Field in Rochester.  The Blue Jays management explained that they had to reduce their staff because of the lack of income from fans during this season and they expect to need 2 fewer managers in 2021 because of the anticipated reduction in lower level minor league teams.  That, of course, is one of the demands Major League Baseball is making in their proposals to revamp the minor leagues starting in 2021. The anticipated status of Minor League Baseball could have been a factor in the firing of Huckaby as stated above.  What is known for certain is that there has been no change in the stalled negotiations between MiLB and Major League Baseball with the working Professional Baseball Agreement between MiLB and MLB set to end on September 30th.   In the meantime, the International League, including the Bisons, does not have a 2021 schedule and one is not expected until the status of MiLB leagues and teams is determined Your chances of catching a glimpse through the fences of former and possibly future Bisons on the Blue Jays taxi squad practicing at Frontier Field in Rochester are now passed.  The Jays closed that training site after a workout on Monday, September 21st.  The players who will be on the Jays 40-man roster moved to Buffalo on the 22nd and will remain here until the Jays season ends. With just 2 games to be played in the regular season, former Bisons outfielder Lourdes Gurriel Jr. had the 9th best batting average in the American League at .297. Transactions: On September 14th, the Milwaukee Brewers claimed former Bisons outfielder Billy McKinney off waivers from the Blue Jays. On September 16th, the Blue Jays activated former Bisons outfielder Teoscar Hernandez from the 10-day Injured List, optioned former Bisons LHP Anthony Kay to their alternate training site at Frontier Field in Rochester and recalled former Bisons RHP Jacob Waguespack from their alternate training site. On September 17th, the Blue Jays placed former Bisons RHP Jacob Waguepack on the 10-day Injured List with a left back strain, activated former Bisons RHP Wilmer Font from the 10-day Injured List and recalled former Bisons RHP T.J. Zeuch from their alternate training site. On September 19th, the Blue Jays optioned former Bisons infielder Santiago Espinal to their alternate training site. On September 24th, the Blue Jays activated former Bisons RHP Nate Pearson from the 10-day Injured List and designated former Bisons RHP Wilmer Font for assignment. IN OTHER NEWS: On September 16th, the Blue Jays, Phillies, Red Sox and Twins announced their 2021 Spring Training schedules.  You can find them on the web sites of those teams.  Then, the next day all of the teams that train in Arizona announced their 2021 Spring Training schedules without listing any game times.  You can find the schedules on the web sites of those teams.  One day later all of the remaining teams that train in Florida announced their Spring Training schedules.  Although the Governor of Florida has lifted all restrictions on people attending events or going to stores, none of the teams have decided how many fans will be allowed into stadiums for spring training games.  The Blue Jays who train in Dunedin are particularly concerned because the Canadian borders into the United States are closed at this time and currently any Canadians who fly into the United States are required to quarantine themselves when they return to Canada.  If those restrictions remain in effect next February and March, they could significantly determine how many Canadians are able to come to Dunedin for spring training games.  It could make a lot a seats at the Dunedin stadium available to U.S. citizens.  All of this is speculation until we find out just what will be the situation in February and March of 2021.   Many Major League teams will be making modifications in their spring training stadiums to accommodate changes that are required because of Covid-19.  The Yankees announced that they will be making changes at Steinbrenner Stadium in Tampa that will cost over $1,600,000.00 with the payment being shared with the Tampa Sports Authority that controls the facility. TRIVIA ANSWERS: 1. Former Bisons pitcher Jordan Romano had the lowest earned run average of the former Bisons with the Blue Jays this season at 1.23.  Other former Bisons were not that far behind: Sean Ried-Foley: 1.35, T. J. Zeuch: 1.59, Ryan Borucki: 2.70.  Top prospect Nate Pearson ended with a 6.00 ERA. 2. Hank and Tommie Aaron combined for the most Major League home runs with 768.  The nearest brother combination to them was Dom, Joe and Vince DiMaggio with 573 homers. BACK PAGE: With the completion of the regular Major League season, I will continue these reports until the Blue Jays are eliminated from the playoffs.  After they end their season, I will send reports only once each month until the start of spring training, unless something noteworthy happens during the month.  Thanks for reading and thanks for the kind words several of you have sent to me.  I enjoy doing the reports and appreciate knowing that you enjoy reading them.
