Spring Training Report 12

Hello Bisons Booster Club members, family and friends,

This is your Booster Club First Vice-President reporting from West Melbourne, Florida, after watching the Mets defeat the Cardinals, 4-1, with some help from 2 former Bisons. TRIVIA QUESTIONS: 1.  Why was Lourdes Gurriel Jr. limited to only 84 games with the Blue Jays last year? 2.  What player hit 40 or more home runs 3 times and had more home runs than strikeouts each year? Answers below. WEATHER REPORT: The temperature at the 1:10 PM start of the Mets game this today in Port St. Lucie was 89 degrees.  By the 5th inning, was up to 91 degrees under mostly clear skies with an 11 mph wind blowing out to RF. SPORTS PAGE: While I was attending the Mets game, the Blue Jays lost to the Rays on the road, 9-5. At bat for the Jays: Jonathan Davis CF struck out twice, walked once and scored a run. .000 Joe Panik 2B went 0 for 2 with a walk and a run scored. .455. Bo Bichette Ss hit a single and his first triple of the spring scoring one run and driving in 3 while walking once and stealing his first base of the spring. .222. Andy Burns 3B was hitless in his only time at bat. .300. Lourdes Gurriel Jr. LF hit a single and a double driving in a run. .176. Rowdy Tellez 1B was 0 for 3 with 2 strikeouts. .263. Patrick Kivlehan 1B in his one plate appearance single, scored and drove in a run. .333. Caleb Joseph C went 0 for 3 with 2 strikeouts.  .167. Anthony Alford RF hit a single, scored in one of his 2 trips to the plate and stole his 4th base.  .188. On the mound: Anthony Kay was the starting pitcher, but lasted only 1/3 of an inning as he walked four batters, allowed one hit and was charged with 4 earned runs. 12.46. Travis Bergen finished the first  inning allowing 1 hit, walking 1 batter and striking out 2. 0.00. Jake Waguespack pitched 2 innings, giving up 2 hits with a walk and 3 strikeouts.  0.00. John Romano pitched an inning striking out 1 batter. 0.00. A. J. Cole also pitched an inning striking out 1 batter. 0.00 Former Bisons in the Mets starting lineup: Rene Rivera was the starting catcher, struck out twice, grounded out to the shortstop once and threw out a runner trying steal second base. Marcus Stoman was the starting pitcher going 3 full innings, allowing one double, walking one batter, striking out 4 batters and throwing out one runner who wandered to far off second base after hitting the double. Also, Tim Tebow pitch hit in the bottom of the 8th inning and grounded out to the second baseman. Attendance: 5,380. Former Bisons in other games played today: For the Yankees: Geo Ursela 3B went 1 for 2 with 2 runs scored, a walk and a strikeout. For the Indians: Oliver Perez pitched a scoreless inning striking out 1 batter. For the White Sox: Edwin Encarnacion DH was 0 for 2. For the Rockies: Daniel Murphy 1B had a hit in one of his trip times at bat. For the Brewers: Eric Sogard 3B was 0 for 2. IN OTHER NEWS: The clock on the Mets scoreboard today was using military time, so it showed that the game started at 13:10 in the afternoon. TRIVIA ANSWERS: 1. Lourdes Gurriel Jr. was limited to 84 games with Toronto in 2019 due to playing in Buffalo for a while and 2 trips to the injury list.   Despite that limitation, on August 7th of last year against Tampa Bay,he hit is 19th home run of the season to become the fastest player to reach 30 home runs in Blue Jays history (143 games). 2. Ted Kluszewski, the Reds first baseman, posted seasons of 40, 49 and 47 home runs from 1953 through 1955.  His strikeout totals those same seasons were 34, 35 and 40.  In 3 seasons, he hit 136 home runs and struck out just 109 times.
