Spring Training Report 16

Hello Bisons Booster Club members, family and friends, This is your Booster Club First Vice-President reporting from West Melbourne, Florida, after watching the Mets defeat the Astros, 3-1, in Port St. Lucie and hearing the Mets fans take out their frustrations on the Houston starters.  (See below.) TRIVIA QUESTIONS: 1. When and where did former Bison LHP Anthony Kay win his first Major League game? 2. Which is the only Major League team to hit 10 home runs in a game? WEATHER REPORT: Temperature at 6:45 AM Eastern Daylight Savings Time today in West Melbourne: 64 degrees under cloudy skies with a 13 mph wind out of the ENE.  The high temp in W. Melbourne today was 74 degrees under skies that eventually cleared.  At 1:10 PM in Port St. Lucie, when the game started, the temperature was 69 degrees under totally overcast skies with a 16 mph wind blowing from right to left field.  By the middle innings of the game, the temp went up to 71 and then back to 69 before the game ended. SPORTS PAGE: Today, the Blue Jays got back on the winning way by defeating the Phillies 9-0 in Dunedin. At bat for the Jays: Bo Bichette SS hit his second home run of the spring in 1 of his 3 times at bat and struck out once. .261 Santiago Espinal SS hit his first triple of the spring in one of his 2 plate appearances, scored a run and struck out  the other time at bat. .313. Jonathan Davis RF hit his first double of the spring, drove in 2 runs and scored 2 runs. .250. Lourdes Gurriel Jr. LF hit a single, drove in a run and walked once. .318. Joe Panik PH-DH went 0 for 1. 400. Randal Grichuk CF struck out twice and walked once. .211. Rowdy Tellez 1B also struck out twice and walked once. .227. Patrick Kivlehan 1B was 0 for 1. .250. On the mound: Ty Tice pitched the 5th inning and walked 3 batters, but did not allow a run. 4.91. Thomas Pannone took the mound for the 6th inning, struck out 2 batters and allowed one hit. 3.86. A. J. Cole pitched a perfect 7th inning striking out 2 batters. 0.00. Jordan Romano pitched the 8th inning, allowing only 1 hit. 0.00. When the umpires met the team managers today in Port St. Lucie, they did not do the usual handshake, but instead did fist bumps.  When the home team batboy met with the home plate umpire about delivering baseballs, the two of them did shake hands. The only former Bison to appear in the game was catcher Rene Rivera who did to the Astros what he did several times last year to the Bisons. He hit a home run in his only time up to bat. Houston starters George Springer CF, Michael Brantley DH and Alex Bergman 2B came up to bat three times each during the first six innings of the game.  Each time they were greeted with VERY LOUD BOOS from the Mets fans and when Springer departed the game after striking out in the 6th inning, he could hear some of the loudest fans shouting, CHEATER, CHEATER, CHEATER.  Because of these kinds of greetings from fans, some of the Astros starting fielders do not travel to away games, but play only at the Astros spring training home. Time of game: 2 hours and 27 minutes. Attendance: 6,906. Former Bisons in other games played today: For the Yankees: Geo Urshela 3B was 1 for 2 with a walk, Erik Kratz C also was 1 for 2 and Josh Thole C was 0 for 1. For the Marlins: Jon Berti 3B went 1 for 3. For the Cardinals: Brett Cecil pitched the 7th inning, walking 2 batters. For the Nationals: Asdrubal Cabrera 3B went 0 for 2. For the Red Sox: Kevin Pillar RF was 1 for 3 with a run scored. For the Orioles: Dwight Smith Jr. LF had 2 hits in 3 times at bat and drove in 2 runners. For the Rockies: Daniel Murphy 1B was 0 for 3 plus a walk. Three other games in Arizona are not yet finished. IN OTHER NEWS: Everyone who attended the Mets game today received a Mets banner 36 inches X 12 inches sponsored by Delta Airlines, the official airline of the Mets. The congregation in which we worship normally shares the Peace with each other by a handshake, but today that was eliminated from the worship services. Fitbits have not been around for very many years, but the one I have is one of the originals and it is now impossible to get a replacement wrist strap for it.  My strap is near the point of breaking in half so today my wife gave me an "early birthday present" of a new and more sophisticated  Fitbit.  I will get this report on its way so that I can take time to activate the new Fitbit. TRIVIA ANSWERS: 1.  Anthony Kay earned his first Major League win as he pitched in relief for the first time on September 19th of last year in Baltimore.  He allowed 2 runs on 4 hits over 4 innings with 1 walk and 3 strikeouts. 2.  The Blue Jays are the only Major League team to hit 10 home runs in a game.  They defeated the Orioles, 18-3 on September 14, 1987.  Three players accounted for 7 of the home runs: 3 and 5 runs batted in by catcher Ernie Whitt, two by third baseman Rance Mulliniks and two by left fielder and the season's American League Most Valuable Player George Bell.  The others were by Fred McGriff, Rob Ducey and Lloyd Moseby. BACK PAGE: My next live game is not until Saturday back at Dunedin, but I will continue to send reports from the sources I have. Charlie Greene, Fist Vice-President, Buffalo Bisons Booster Club
