Spring Training Report 7

Hello Bisons Booster Club members, family and friends,

This is your Booster Club First Vice-President reporting from Dunedin, Florida. TRIVIA QUESTIONS: 1. What all-time rookie regard did Cavan Biggio set last year? 2. Who was the White Sox manager who piloted the team to the 1959 American League championship? Answers below. WEATHER REPORT: Temperature at 6:25 AM when I started out on my 2 mile walk south on the Pinellas Trail and north on a city main street: 52 degrees with a 5 mph wind out of the northwest under mostly cloudy skies.  The temperature went down to 50 degrees before rising to a high of 62 with winds blowing between 7 and 14 mph out of the NW.  The normal high in Dunedin on this date is 74 degrees and normal low 56 degrees.  The all-time high was 86 degrees in 2017 and the record low was 30 degrees in 1974. SPORTS PAGE: This afternoon, the Blue Jays defeated the Tigers, 5-4, in Lakeland.  (statistics are after today's game) Billy McKinney RF hit a single, scored a run and walked. .400 Anthony Alford CF went 0 for 2. .091.  Also Anthony Alford committed his second error of the spring. Santiago Espinal 2B hit his second double of the spring, drove in a run and scored a run. .571. Joe Panik SS hit a single, walked twice and scored 2 runs. .429. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. DH hit an RBI single and struck out once. .273. Teoscar Hernandez CF hit his first double of the spring and his first triple driving in 3 runs, stealing his first base of the spring and striking out once. .273. Rowdy Tellez 1B hit his second double of the spring and struck out once. .455. Patrick Kivlehan PR-1B was 0 for 1. .222. Caleb Joseph C went 0 for 3. .250 Andy Burns 3B was 0 for 1. .286. On the mound: Starting pitcher Anthony Kay pitched 2 innings, struck out 3 and was charged with 2 hits and a walk.  He was credited with the win. 4.50 ERA Ty Tice pitched the 3rd inning, allowing 2 earned runs on 1 hit  with 2 walks and 3 strikeouts. 9.00 Jacob Waguespack threw 1.1 innings walking 4 batters and striking out 1 without allowing a run. 0.00. Travis Bergen pitched 2/3 of an inning striking out 1 batter. 0.00. Former Bisons in other games played today: For the Yankees: Geo Ursela 3B went 0 for 3. For the Orioles: Dwight Smith Jr. LF went 0 for 4 with one RBI. For the Brewers: Erick Sogard was 0 for 2 with a walk. For the Rangers: Shin Soo Choo RF was 0 for 2, but drove in a run. For the Mets: starting pitcher Marcus Stroman allowed 1 earned run on 2 hits with a walk and a strikeout over 2 innings and Jeurys Familia pitched the 4th inning  allowing one hit with a walk and a strikeout. The Baseball America newsletter reported yesterday that Major League Baseball is in the final stages of establishing a plan that will change pickoff rules for several minor leagues.  According to 2 farm directors, minor league pitchers will be required to step off the pitching rubber before they can throw to a base on a pickoff attempt.  The expectation is that the rule will be enforced in Single-A level games and below.  It is possible that Double-A teams will be required to observe the rule also.  When the new rule was enforced in the independent Atlantic League in the second half of their season last year, stolen base attempts went up 66% per games and the success rate increased by 06%.  At the same time, double plays decreased by 19%. IN OTHER NEWS: The morning my wife and I spend 2 hours and 20 minutes on a nearly private tour of the Big Cat Rescue facility which is a non-profit educational sanctuary in Tampa.  We started by preparing treats for the cats and then were led by a staff member who gave the treats and regular food to the cats.  At the 67-acre accredited sanctuary, we saw lions, tigers, leopards, ocelots, bobcats, cougars, lynx and servals.  The Rescue facility provides a permanent home for unwanted wild cats, former circus cats and other cats rescued by authorities.  You can find more information at BigCatRescue.org and Big Cat Rescue on Facebook.  Also, I posted 15 photos on my Facebook page, but they do not do justice to the facility because they make it look like the animals are in tight fenced in enclosers.  Actually, they have very large enclosures through which the staff can feed them and around which the animals can roam often out of sight of humans.  In addition, every cat is allowed to go on "vacation" in a fenced in wilderness area out of sight of humans where they can catch small creatures as they would do in the wild. Today, Dunedin hosted an outdoor market in the park three blocks from our motel featuring vegetables, art works, clothing and other items.  It is an every Friday event. TRIVIA ANSWERS: 1.  Cavan Biggio ended the 2019 season on a 29 game on-base streak, the longest by a Blue Jay and the longest by a Toronto rookie all-time.  The previous record was held by Russ Adams who had a 27 game on-base streak in 2005. 2. Al Lopez, whom many folks think was the best manager in White Sox history, got fast results, leading the Chicago team to a 90 won - 64 lost mark and second place in 1957, 82-72 and second place again in 1958 and a 94-60 mark and a pennant in 1959, the team's first  in 42 years. BACK PAGE: The Blue Jays are back in Dunedin on Saturday so we will be headed to TDBallpark for our second last game of this trip. Charlie Greene, First Vice-President, Buffalo Bisons Booster Club
